All Good Things ...
As many of you have noticed, things haven't been quite the same at Buckland Media this spring. And as many have either heard from me or through the grapevine, that is because my family and I have been busy packing to uproot ourselves from our home of the past 19 years to move to Washington State.

Of course, this means that Buckland Media will no longer be working to cover high school sports in Northeast Michigan.

It wasn't a decision that came easily. The economy has affected my family in ways that all too many people who live in our area would find familiar. With jobs and income disappearing, we are having to leave behind our friends and our life here.

Other than getting scores updated through the end of the 2010 state tournaments, there won't be any further updates as far as stories and scores to the site.

The site, however, will not be taken down in the forseeable future. All photos will still be available through Shutterfly (though I will no longer be able to accept mailed order forms or checks). If time allows I will also upload some older photos from the late 1990s through 2003 that have never been available on the site. In the weeks to come I'll likely rearrange some things to make it obvious when new photos have been added.

It's been a pleasure and a privilege to work with the coaches, parents and athletes of Northeast Michigan. A lot of people have said that they will miss what Buckland Media has done. But not nearly as much as I will miss all of you. Thanks, God bless and keep in touch!

AuGres-Sims' softball team and Hale's baseball team combined to go 13-37 during the regular season. But those records meant nothing during this week's district tournament, as both walked off the field with district championship trophy and a trip to next weekend's regional tournament at Unionville-Sebewaing.

Linda Eyer
Standish-Sterling's Ashley Wakulat (3) leave the field for the last time after the Panthers' overtime loss to Essexville Garber in Tuesday's district tournament opener.

Standish-Sterling's Cole Walderzak threw his way to the NEMC title in the discus at Wednesday's league championship meet, edging Ogemaw Heights' Anthony Zettel. Zettel came back to defeat Walderzak for the shot put title. Ogemaw Heights won both the boys' and girls' team titles.

Whittemore-Prescott's Dylan DeBoever slides past AuGres-Sims' Brent Schwiderson as the Cardinals wrapped up their first winning season in several years with a sweep of the Wolverines.

Brent Baker
AuGres-Sims' Emily Lutz won Division 4 regional titles in the discus (above) and shot put to pace the Wolverines at Saturday's state qualifying meet.

Tawas Area's Nick Schirmer chips the ball toward the green during Wednesday's NEMC golf championship match. The Braves won their second straight league title with a 16-stroke victory over second-place Ogemaw Heights.

Brent Baker

The defensive play of Josie Wiltse (above) in center field was a big reason Ogemaw Heights was able to defeat Tawas Area 7-2 in eight innings in the second game of Tuesday's doubleheader and end the Braves' NEMC title hopes.

Brent Baker

Ogemaw Heights turned in its first doubleheader sweep since the opening week of the season with Tuesday's victories over Tawas Area.

Ogemaw Heights' Ronnie Trower takes the early lead in the 110 hurdles at Friday's Falcon Invitational. Trower finished third.

Brent Baker

Ogemaw goalkeeper Kaitlin McClain blocks Ashley Wakulat's (3) shot attempt, but SSC still came out on top 5-0 in Monday's NEMC contest.

Brent Baker

Arenac Eastern's Danielle Jurek (rear) turned a line drive out into a double play during the first game of Thursday's doubleheader with Posen. The Vikings, though, held off a late AE rally to win the opener 5-3, then blitzed the Eagles 17-5 in the second game for a sweep that kept Posen tied (with one loss) with Hillman atop the North Star League.

Linda Eyer

Standish-Sterling's girls soccer team took a huge step toward securing its best-ever NEMC finish Wednesday, topping Tawas Area for the second time this season to take a two-game lead over the Braves for the league's second-place spot.

Linda Eyer

Anthony Zettel, who threw a state-best and school-record 59-9.5 in the shot put earlier in the week, won both the shot and discus (above) at Friday's Falcon Invitational. His toss of 171-4 edged Standish-Sterling's Cole Walderzak (168-4) in a battle of discus all-staters.

Linda Eyer

Ogemaw's Kalena Franklin takes the early lead and cruises to victory in the 100-meter hurdles in 16.11 at Friday's Falcon Invitational. Ogemaw Heights' girls went on to win the large school team title at their home meet.

Brent Baker

Tawas Area's Emily Short cruised to victory in the 800, 1600 and 3200-meter runs at Friday's Whittemore-Prescott Invitational.

Linda Eyer

AuGres-Sims' Connor Pendred pulls away from the field to win the 200-meter dash at Friday's W-P Invitational.

Brent Baker

Hale's Eddy Cadwell takes a cut during the Eagles' doubleheader split with AuGres-Sims on Thursday, Apr. 29.

Linda Eyer

AuGres-Sims' Lyndsay Morrison pitched into extra innings Thursday as the Wolverines edged Hale in the first game of a North Star League doubleheader. Hale bounced to win the nightcap and earn a split.

Linda Eyer

Pinconning picked up its first NEMC victory since May 8, 2008 with a 2-0 victory at Ogemaw Heights on Monday. Above, Anissa Goretcki boots the ball past Ogemaw's Alesha Wood.

Brent Baker

Standish-Sterling's Karina Pierce (8) and Danielle Milan celebrate after Pierce headed in Milan's crossing pass for a goal during SSC's 8-1 victory over Oscoda on Tuesday, Apr. 26. The victory was the Panthers' fourth in a row after an 0-3 start to the season.

Mitchell McFarland (above) and Standish-Sterling ran to a tie for the Sunrise Side Invitational title with John Glenn on Friday.
