Outlook: Ogemaw will be looking to replace eight graduating seniors that were the heart of last year's 18-4 club. Among the 12 returning to the team are several with legitimate state finals hopes.
Andrew Funsch (130 pounds) did make the state finals last season, though his chances at a medal were derailed by a severe stomach flu. Drake Killinger (152) qualified for the regionals while senior Carl Worthy (215) and juniors Kyle Scott (135) and Michael Lentz (140) are established varsity wrestlers that coach Matt Keeton is looking to for leadership.
The Falcons also return several wrestlers who competed at the JV level last season, including seniors Allen Good (171) and Matt Keeton (145) and junior Anthony Carollo (189).
"We start this season with a fairly young squad," Keeton said. "We're looking to gain experience and compete for another NEMC championship. A good attitude, solid work ethic and good team leadership are the strengths of this squad."
It may take awhile for the Falcon lineup to be solidified to where they can compete for their fifth-straight league title, but Keeton expects that to happen by the end of the year.
"We're young and a bit shorthanded," he said. "But this team expects to provide experience to the young wrestlers and improve throughout the season.
